Leafy Spurge Plot with Perspective Herbicide
Photos of Leafy Spurge test plot near Ashton Idaho.
Treatments were made July 9, 2009 with a CO2 plot spray at 20 gallons per acre. Pictures were taken July 27,2010. The photo on the top is DuPont's new herbicide Perspective which offers a new active ingredient and new class of chemistry for control of Leafy Spurge. The photo on the bottom is a standard treatment with Dow's Tordon 22K herbicide which has been the control standard for Leafy Spurge for many years.

Goatheads or Puncturevine
Here it is the middle of July and calls are coming in for advice on controlling puncturevine often referred to as goatheads. This plant is known for its late arrival during the season hence few people remember the best venue for control is early spring. During this time period preemergent herbicides can be applied and incorporated into the soil surface to prevent seed germination.
Preemergent herbicides are the best choices for control of this troublesome plant. The reason being the pesky burs or stickers (goatheads) that raise havoc on feet, bicycle tires and more. Herbicides that stop the growth of weeds before or as they germinate do not allow growth and the production of puncturevine seeds, hence the goatheads are controlled as well as the plant. One application of a recommended preemergent product will usually suffice for the season.
Once the puncturevine plants are actively growing most postemergent herbicides will control the growth. Products containing 2,4-D or glyphosate will control this weed but there will be multiple periods of germination and will require multilple applications of herbicide.
Products that provide the best results include the herbicides Telar and Pendulum. Applied early spring and incorporated with 1/2 of moisture they provide nearly season long control on puncturevine.
Always read and follow the label recommendations. If you have questions ask someone you know to be knowledgeable about pesticides or hire your application out to a professional applicator.
Telar is a DuPont Product
Pendulum is a BASF Product.
